Eco shoppen in Soho

Het is niet altijd makkelijk om de juiste keuzes te maken wanneer je jezelf eens een dagje wil verwennen. Er zijn wel grote ketens die luidkeels roepen dat ze bio katoen hebben of andere ecologische spullen, maar gebruik dan vooral je gezond verstand. Extreem lage prijzen zijn vaak een teken aan de wand van een onrechtvaardige situatie. De katoen mag dan misschien wel bio zijn, maar stel je gerust ook vragen hoe het kledingstuk tot stand is gekomen. De recente gebeurtenissen in Bangladesh zijn nog maar eens het bewijs dat de mode-industrie nog serieus zal moeten bijbenen om ecologisch en sociaal verantwoord te zijn. Positief is wel dat veel nieuwe ontwerpers dit als uitdaging zien waardoor er meer en meer leuke ecologische kledij en schoenen te vinden zijn.

Het grootste voordeel aan New York is dat je hier echt bijna alles kan vinden. Aangezien er een steeds groter publiek is voor ecologische kledij, is het aanbod ook bijzonder groot. Ik koos voor de buurt Soho om op onderzoek te gaan. Soho staat gekend bij fashionista’s en is een must do op vele lijstje. In de buurt zijn er maar liefst vijf winkels om te bezoeken.

De eerste stop is Eileen Fisher. Ik kwam voor de eerste keer in aanraking met het merk op het Green Festival in New York waar ze een modeshow gaven. Aangenaam verrast door de felle kleuren en toffe snit, stond dit merk dus bovenaan mijn lijstje. Jammer genoeg was de winkel een beetje een teleurstelling. Het publiek in de winkel was vrij oud en ook de presentatie gaf een oudere doelgroep aan. Van de toffe kleuren op de modeshow, was niet zo veel meer te merken. Ook de snit was niet bepaald op mijn lijf geschreven. Dat gezegd zijnde, blijft Eileen Fisher wel een fantastisch merk. Alleen al hun inzet voor vrouwen in de productielanden is noemenswaardig.

Tweede stop is Patagonia. Ik kwam voor de eerste keer in aanraking met Patagonia tijdens mijn studies in een project rond bamboe wielerkledij. Helaas zijn er in België nog geen verkooppunten, dus was ik nieuwsgierig. Patagonia kan je omschrijven als de ecologische tegenhanger van The North Face. Hun kledij is sportief en jong met veel kleur en toffe motieven. Ze hebben ook een mooie selectie yogakledij. Een bewuster bedrijf dan Patagonia zal je waarschijnlijk niet vinden. Buiten aan de winkel kan je een petitie tekenen om het boren naar olie in Amerika een halt toe te roepen. Hun volledige productieproces kan je online bekijken en ze zijn transparant in alles wat ze doen. Het leuke is dat er zelfs een Belgisch bedrijf leverancier van hun stoffen is. Naast het reduceren van hun impact en het gebruik van milieuvriendelijke stoffen, is Patagonia ook sociaal geëngageerd, zodat hun werknemers krijgen waar ze recht op hebben. Een bedrijf naar mijn hart, dat nog eens leuke kleren maakt ook!

Een derde stop is de schoenenwinkel Coclico. Zoals vele vrouwen zijn schoenen mijn zwakke plek. Hoewel je in schoenen vaak heel toffe ecologische initiatieven vindt, voldeed deze winkel helaas niet aan mijn eisen. De schoenen op zich zijn prachtig, maar met enkel gerecycleerd rubber als ecologisch argument, ben ik niet overtuigd.

De voorlaatste stop is een schattig winkeltje dat Love Adorned heet. Ze hebben een grote variëteit aan spulletjes, van juwelen en kleren tot vazen en dekentjes. Niet alles is ecologisch, maar een groot deel van de juwelen zijn gemaakt van gerecycleerde materialen. Ik vind twee items in de shop fantastisch. Deze zaadbom automaat is geniaal.

Er zijn nog veel plaatsen waar we meer groen zouden kunnen creëren. Gewoon een zaadbom op gooien en de natuur doet de rest.

Binnenkort ga ik het op mijn blog hebben over beautyproducten. Ik gebruik zelden nagellak, aangezien het een schadelijk product is.

Je kan je dus voorstellen hoe enthousiast ik was bij het lezen van onderstaand briefje: RGB Nail Polish, $20 (€15). Gemaakt in de goeie ouwe USA! Vrij van formaldehyde, toluene en camphor EN nooit getest op dieren. Het feit dat er een groot aanbod is aan toffe kleuren maakt dit voor mij een grote winnaar.

Laatste stop is With & Wessel. Het is een Noors bedrijf dat louter werkt met wol, een van de meest milieuvriendelijke vezels. Naast het gebruik van natuurlijke vezels zorgt With & Wessel ook voor een zo laag mogelijk impact van hun productieproces op het milieu. De snit van de kledij en de stijl spreken mij onmiddellijk aan.

Ik probeer enkele stuks en in tegenstelling tot mijn verwachting, prikt de wol niet. De kleedjes zijn luchtig en perfect voor de zomer. Mijn ogen vallen vooral op een rood kleedje met open rug.

Ik zou het zonder twijfelen gekocht hebben, maar $165 (€125) is helaas voorlopig niet voor mijn portemonnee.

yIk ga dan wel met lege handen naar huis, maar ga zeker nog teruggaan naar deze leuke winkel. In België heb je minder keuze aan ecologische alternatieve winkels, maar ga zeker eens kijken bij Haleluja in Brussel en Today Is A Good Day in Gent en Antwepen.
